Whoa! Can you believe that? The App Store was launched on July 11, 2008. Less than 7 months later, there are 20,000 applications (see TiPB article). No wonder Apple took forever to approve the Mobicip app. Going beyond the sheer number of apps in the App Store, think about the impact the App Store has made in how software is distributed. The days of shrink-wrapped disks delivered in a box are numbered as Google Android, Microsoft and Amazon, among other players launch their own versions of an online marketplace for software downloads.
What does it mean to the average consumer? Well, think about what iTunes did to the music industry. It was a game changer in the music industry and made the distribution of music incredibly democratic. Welcome to the new world of software where most of it will be free or 99c.
